Statement

The research lines covered by my group are broad. As the scientist responsible for the Palynology and Plant Conservation Group of the CIALE ((http://ciale.usal.es), I have been interested in the botanical characterization of honeys and other bee-derived products and in aeropalynological analyses aimed at determining the variations in the amounts of pollen in the atmosphere and their influence in patients with allergies. I also feel it to be of importance to study the conservation of flora under a certain degree of threat or of agronomic interest with a view to conserving biodiversity. To accomplish this, it is crucial to carry out studies on genetic variability and seed germination protocols. Thus, we have consolidated the germplasm bank of the University of Salamanca USAL (bancogermoplasma@usal.es), where we keep the seeds of species reported to be in danger of extinction according to the Catalogue of Endangered Floral and Agricultural Species of Castile & Leon, although we are now also starting assays directed towards improving the conservation of fungal species of interest. We have also been interested in the environmental management of the University of Salamanca, and I am the Director of the Office for Environmental Affairs (http://calidadambiental.usal.es/), where we strive to improve the environment through studies addressing energy efficiency, the management of residues, environmental quality, etc., and from which we attempt to involve the population in general (and especially students) in sustainable mobility, environmental solidarity and sustainability. Finally, from our perspective the setting up of a “healthy” University is a priority.

The development of the above research lines has led me to collaborate with other investigators and Agencies (such as the Central Forest Nursery, the Atlantic Botanical Gardens in Gijón, The Environmental Council of the Regional Government of Castile & Leon, the Nature and Humankind Foundation, the University Chair sponsored by Iberduero, etc). In this sense, the most outstanding research projects in recent years have been as follows:
